"Lost World" "Reflector"

One can say these photographs are my way of expressing the strong impression I had when visiting the
area in Beijing for the first time.

After the area was marked for redevelopment, there were no remnants of the communities or residents
that once existed, just vast expanses of inorganic ruins. In the wasteland that was once a village, only
the half demolished buildings with courtyards (Ch: siheyuan) gave some hint of human presence. I was
interested in being able to peep into their way of life, if only briefly. I remember thinking despite the
community being on the verge of death, this was the only remaining form of life.

With almost all the brick buildings in pieces, the village was practically in ruins. Amongst the rubble,
however, there remained what looked like a footpath made by the residents.I followed this path when
taking these photographs. Lost World are works made up of photographic images pieced together.
While the intricate combination of multiple images reflects the disarray of the area, the black and white
prints keep the overall impact in balance and a new landscape appears.

Reflector came about as a way to capture the shocking scenes I saw within the frame of my camera. By
placing mirrors on the ground, the surrounding environment was reflected into my finder, creating a deep
and multi-layered  image.
Going beyond a one dimensional image is a concept that is shared by Lost World and Reflector. I have
tried to represent a complicated environment through a multi - faced means. These works were influenced
by the environment I was in, and this is reflected in the creative process.
